Irma, pack ever the scarf

... or thoughts about the cold

What St. Jakob have Defereggen (1390 m) and Vladivostok (40 m) public ? Exactly, they are considered cold poles. As a refrigerator. As refuges from snowmen and polar bears, ...

Current Temperature in St. Jakob : -16 degrees (-13 degrees last night) - tendency to fall. If everything is as planned to be there in the night on Friday -25 degrees measured. A clear long night (18 h darkness), little wind, arctic air and snow covered surfaces are the basic requirements. But to do that later. The climate is alpine in Defereggental, one would say. Because of its east-west orientation and its geometry, it is subject to extreme seasonal fluctuations: Extrema of +32.1 degrees and -29.8 degrees represent a potential annual variation of 61.9 degrees!

What awaits Vladivostok : currently -21 degrees, in the coming nights, but to level -30 to it. The amazing thing about Vladivostok: it lies at sea level and is situated on the same latitude as Florence. Would it be in the city of the Medici as cold, if it were almost over with the glory of David. Would be -30 degrees in Florence conceivable? The record is at -23 degrees in January 1983 (source Wikipedia). But well, it is indeed in a completely different climate zone ...

Unlike in St. James and Vladivostok: both are in the same Climate: humid continental (average summer temperature is 21-28 degrees, winter means below -3 degrees) with a mild summer (DFB). Looking at the extremes of Vladivostok, the result is +33.6 and -31.4 with a potential annual cycle of 65 degrees!

more records ...
The absolute record is the way in the cold Antarctic desert. In Vostok, a Russian research station (why were called so ...?) 21 Juli 1983 to 89.4 degrees measured. The Austrian record low is -37.4 degrees on Sunday view, however, in 3104 m altitude. In populated areas, the records are significantly higher:

-36.0 Litschau (Lower Austria) 02/10/1956
-33.2 Aspach (Upper Austria) 01/08/1985
-33.1 Weitra (Lower Austria) 10/02/1956
-33.0 Hall / Admont (St) 01.12. 1939
-33.0 Zell am See (S) 01/01/1947

Sillian -31.0 (T) 01.01. 1963
-31.0 Zwettl (Lower Austria) 11/01/1940

The records were therefore more likely in January and February, and in the end of January this year 2010: http://alpen-wetter.blogspot.com/2010/01/ kalt.html-rattling.
Back to the current weather ...

pushes After today's snow on Thursday, an intermediate high above the Alps. Thus, the high even during the night following noticeable (EC) are common in the night on Friday again minima in the double-digit minus range expected (in Vienna). To the southwest in the direction of the thermometer drops 20 degrees. According to the JRC, the front from the northwest brings even more detail (+ Genuazyklogenese) and it is much milder. The residents in Defereggental will be there no matter obs -15 or -25 degrees, the record is not already broken. ..
